Overview
Upper Denkyira West District is one of the Twenty-two Administrative Districts in the Central Region.
It was carved out of the Upper Denkyira District due to its growing population which hampered its administration.
Upper Denkyira West became one of the two offshoots of the split and was inaugurated in February, 2008 with Diaso as its capital.
The district has sixteen (16) Electoral Areas and Three (3) Area Councils to aid in administration at the Subdistrict level. The District has been divided into Four main subdistrict namely Diaso subdistrict, Ayanfuri subdistrict, Subin subdistrict and Ntom Subdistrict.
The Upper Denkyira West District lies within latitudes 5º 30’ N and 6º 02’ N of the equator and longitudes 1º W and 2º W of the Greenwich Meridian. It is the Northernmost District in the Central Region. It shares common boundaries with the following districts: Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai District (Western North Region) to the North, Amansie West, Amansie Central and Adansi South Districts (Ashanti Region) to the East, Wassa Amenfi East and Wassa Amenfi West Districts (Western Region) to the West and, Upper Denkyira East District to the South.
The district has a total land area of 579.21 square kilometers which represents 3% of the total land area of the Central Region. It has a population density of 157 persons per square kilometre.
The district’s population is 100,838 comprising 52.9 percent males and 47.1 percent females with growth rate of 4.7 as per the 2021 Population and Housing Census.
There are 153 basic schools in the district comprising 53 Kindergarten, 53 Primary and 47 Junior High Schools in both the public and private sectors. The district has Two (2) Second cycle institutions namely, Diaso Senior High School and Ayanfuri Senior High School which was converted from a community-managed institution to a public school in 2017.
The district is divided into 4 subdistricts.
There is a total of 27 health facilities, thus: 18 CHPS compounds, 3 health centres, 1 CHAG hospital and clinic, and 4 private clinics.
Diaso Health Centre and Subin Health Centre have been designated as a model health centre to serve as a hub for the implementation of the Network of Practice (NOP) in the district
