DISTRICT PROFILE
The Okere District was carved out of the Akuapem North Municipal Assembly and created by Legislative Instrument (L.I) 2342 in 2019 in pursuance to the Government’s Decentralization and Local Government Reform Policy. Located in the southeastern part of the Eastern Region, it borders Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly to the East, the Akuapem North Municipal Assembly to the south, the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly to the West and North, and the Dangme West Municipality to the East.
It is about 58 km from Accra, the national capital and about 35.2km and 43 km to Koforidua, the regional capital through the Adukrom to Asenema, Amanfrom, Nsutam, Nkurakan road and the Adukrom through Akropong, Mamfe, Adawso respectively. Because of its strategic location and added advantage of its proximity to both the National and the Regional capitals, there is high socioeconomic interaction between it and the two capitals in terms of trade, movement, access to goods and services and people. The economy in the Okere district is divided into Agriculture, Industry and Services.
The Okere District comprises nineteen (19) urban towns up the ridge and about 72 rural communities down the ridge, with Adukrom as the district capital. With a growth rate of 1.4%, the district has a population of 53,868 as projected by the 2020 Population and Housing Census for Ghana. The settlements which are on both the mountains and valleys of the district and are nucleated. The district has 158 schools; Public schools constitute 81% while Private schools constitute 19%. It is also important to note that most of the Public basic schools are widely spread within the district to help implement the Free Universal Basic Education Policy. Two Senior High Schools are located at Adukrom Subdistrict and a Vocational/Technical Institute at Abiriw.
There are three (3) subdistricts in terms of health service delivery with each of them having a health centre. There are 21 electoral areas with 22 demarcated and functional Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) zones also providing primary health care services by trained Community Health Officers (CHOs) who are supported by 79 Community-Based Surveillance Volunteers (CBSVs) working within the 72 communities of the district. In addition to the district’s health facilities, the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Government Hospital in the Akwapim North Municipal and Koforidua Regional Hospital in New Juaben Municipal serve as referral facilities and provide advanced and specialized services to people.
