Overview

Krachi East Municipal was created in 2005; the municipal was carved from then Krachi Municipal; (now known as Krachi West municipal). The area is located in the middle zone of the Oti Region. It shares boundaries with Nkwanta municipal in the North-East; Kadjebi Municipal in the East; Biakoye District in the South; Krachi West municipal in the North West and the Volta Lake in the west.

The area covers a land mass of 2,529 km2, with a total population of 116,183 in the year under review and 30% of this population reside on the islands. The municipal has over 265 communities which vary from time to time due to movement and relocation of livestock by the Fulani and fishing activities.

topography and drainage

The topography of the municipal is characterized by isolated undulating highlands located around the Dambai and Asukawkaw area. The nature of the topography is directly related to the soil type. The highland and lowland area have loamy soils and clay soils respectively.

The drainage in the high areas is not intensive as compared to the lowland areas. The major river namely Oti drain into the sea and cause flooding during the rainy season.

climate

The Municipal is located in the middle zone of Oti region in Ghana which is one of the hottest parts of the country. Temperatures are high throughout the year and range between 23°C-28°C, A maximum of 37 c is attainable during the hot season. Rainfalls are heavy during the major season between March and September. The average rainfall is about 750mm.

The population of the Municipality in the year 2024 was 116,183 (projected from 2020 Population and Housing Census). The average annual growth rate of the Municipal is 2.5%. the WIFA population is currently 36, 015.The under-five population of children is 23,236.6

religion and economic activities

The most dominants religious group are Christians follow by Muslim.

The main economic activities in the Municipal include Trading mainly wholesale/retail trade, agro- processing, informal sector service and commerce.

health system

The Municipal is divided into seven (7) Sub-Municipals. These include Oti-East sub-municipal, Oti-West sub-municipal, Kparekpare sub municipal, Dormabin sub-municipal, Tokuroano sub- municipal, Katanga/Asukawkaw sub-municipal and Island sub-municipal.

Health Services in the Municipal are provided by different sectors; Governmental, (34) CHAG (1) and private health institutions (2).

About 30% of the population in the municipality are on island communities. Currently the municipality has no municipal hospital all emergencies are referred to worawora government hospital.
