Location and size

The North Tongu District is one of the District Assemblies in the Volta Region which was carved out of the former North Tongu District Assembly (now Central Tongu District Assembly, Adidome). The district was established in 2012 by Legislative Instrument (L.I) 2081. The district abounds in natural resources such as vast arable land for rice production and more, has the potential of becoming one of the productive and vibrant Districts in the Volta Region and Ghana

The North Tongu District is located along the Volta River and has majority of its communities interspersed along the river. The district has a total land size of about 1,131.64sqkm. The district has a vast arable land available for agricultural development. The district lays within latitudes 5 0 47’N to 60N and longitude 00 5’ E to 00 45’E and shares boundaries with Central Tongu and South Tongu to the East, AsuogyamanS and Lower Manya to the West, to the South is Shai Osudoku and Ada West and Ho West to the North.

Demography

The district has an annual growth rate of 2.25 percent which is slightly lower than the regional figure of 2.4 percent. The sex ratio for the district is 89.75 male per 100 females. The population density is estimated at 99.73 persons per square kilometer as compared to the regional and national population densities of 103.0 and 103.4 persons per square kilometer respectively. 47.8 52.2 District Population by Sex Male Female 6 The urban status of a community is based on the population size only. Localities with population 5,000 or more are classified as urban, whilst localities with population less than 5,000 are classified as rural. Based on this definition, the North Tongu District has more than half of the population leaving in Rural areas (56.3%) with the remaining population leaving in Urban areas.

Governance

The North Tongu District Assembly is the highest political and administrative authority in the district and exercises Deliberative (participatory decision-making, planning, etc.), Legislative (make and enforce By-Laws), and Executive (management, supervisory and administrative) functions and headed by the District Chief Executive. It was established by Legislative Instrument (L.I) 2081. The legislative and deliberative organ of the Assembly has a membership of Forty-Two (42) Assembly Members made up of 40 males and 2 females. Twenty- Nine (29) are Elected members and Thirteen (13) are government appointees with one Member of Parliament. The District Assembly has thirteen Decentralized departments as stipulated in LI 1961 such as Department of Central Administration, Department of Education Youth and Sports, Department of Health, Physical Planning Department, Agric Department, Department of Social Welfare and Community Development and Disaster Prevention and Management Department, Department of Human Resource Management and Statistics Department.

The district has five (5) Senior High Schools (SHS), fifty- 11 eight (58) JHS, seventy-four (74) Primary Schools and seventy-three (73) pre-schools. The level of infrastructure development in the educational sector of the district needs maximum attention if an improvement in the current situation is a priority.

Health

Delivery of Primary Health Care remains one of the topmost priorities of the District Assembly composite annual action plan. The health services system comprehensively covers all levels of care from the Community, Sub-District and the District level. There are thirty-one (31) health facilities of which two (2) are hospitals that serve as major referral Centre to all the CHPS Compounds and Health Centres in the District.
