DISTRICT PROFILE

Denkyembour District is one of 45 districts and municipalities established in Ghana in 2012. It is located in the south-western corner of the Eastern Region and shares boundaries with Kwaebibirim Municipal, Akyemansa District, Birim Central Municipal, West Akim Municipal, and East Akim Municipal. The district covers an area of 183.7 square kilometers.

According to the 2024 census estimates, the population of Denkyembour District is 78875 with a growth rate of 2.1%. The district is characterized by the presence of the Atiwa Range in the North-East and the Birim River, as well as other notable rivers such as Subinsa, Mmo, and Apaam.

The temperature ranges between 26.5 and 27 , and the district lies within a semi-equatorial climate zone with a double maximal rainfall regime. The highest annual rainfall recorded was 8,493.5mm in 1995. The district is also known for its semi-deciduous forest zone and vegetation consisting of low-lying species of hardwood.

The district has three major soil associations, namely Bekwai-Oda Association, Birimean- Chichiwere Association, and Atiwa-Asikuma-Ansum Association. These associations contribute to the district’s suitability for agriculture, including the cultivation of cash crops such as oil palm and citrus, as well as food crops like plantain, cassava, and cocoyam.

Denkyembour District is governed by a District Chief Executive and has one Member of Parliament. It is divided into four political area councils and has a strong traditional leadership under the paramountcy of Akyem Abuakwa.

The district is connected to the national grid, and drinking water sources include mechanized boreholes, rivers, wells, and piped water in major towns. Educational facilities have football fields, and the district capital has a durbar ground used for health events. The district also has tele-communication networks and sanitation facilities, although some communities lack adequate systems.The district has a road network comprising second and third-class roads that link communities within and neighboring districts.

Denkyembour District is rich in natural resources, contributing to the country’s economy through foreign exchange income. The district is endowered with diamond and gold deposits along the Birim river which flows through the district. Farming in cash crops such as oil palm, oranges and rubber plantation and mining are the dominant economic activities in the district. There are two major companies namely the Great Consolidated Diamond Company Limited and Ghana Oil Palm Development Company situated in the District (GOPDC. The district can also boast of the presence of the Oil Palm Research Institute (OPRI) in Kusi and the University of Ghana Forest and Horticulture Crops Research Center in Okumaning. Others are also involved in the services sector such Health and Education. There are four second cycle schools, two TVET and numerus basic schools scatted all over the district.

The district has twenty-four (24) health facilities: two (2) hospital, four (4) Health Centres and eighteen (18) CHPS compounds. The hospitals within the district are GCD Hospital a Quasi- Government Hospital under the management of the Ghana Health Service and St. Dominics Catholic Hospital a CHAG hospital.

GCD Hospital specializes in orthopedic surgeries and offers Outpatient and inpatient services ANC services, ART service, Health information management maternal and Child Health Services.

St. Dominics Catholic Hospital is a CHAG hospital which was upgraded to a secondary referral hospital in 2023. The hospital has an MRI scanner, CT scanner and other sophisticated equipment’s for service delivery. The hospital has a bed capacity of 367. The hospital offers Outpatient and inpatient services, ANC services, ART service, Health information management, Maternal and Child Health Services as well as specialized care such as surgeries, neurology, obstetrics and gynaecology, ophthalmic services, dental services amongst others.
