Overview

The municipality is one of the Eighteen (18) districts/ municipalities in the Volta Region and it is located in the Northern part of the region. It is bounded by other district / municipalities and the Republic of Togo as follows:

  • North by Guan District
  • North-west by Biakoye District
  • South-west by Kpando Municipality
  • South by Afadjato district and
  • East by Republic of Togo.

Area and Population

The municipality consists of Seventy Nine (79) communities with a population of 117,381 from the 2021 National population census. The population growth rate is 2.5%.

Topography

To the east is a mountain range, which is part of the Akwapim-Togo ranges. The highest mountain in Ghana, Afadjato is located in the district.

Rivers

The main river is Dayi. We have Wli waterfalls and Sasa falls in Wli and near Alavanyo respectively. These are perennial waterfalls.

Climate and Vegetation

  • Major rainy season – May to July
  • Minor rainy season – August to October
  • Dry (Harmattan) season – November to February

The vegetation is of two types – forest and semi-savannah vegetation zones.

Socio-Political Organization

Tribes

The major tribe in the municipality is Ewes

Religion

Christianity is the main form of religious expression, followed by Islam. Traditional African worship is also common.

Recreation

Recreation activities are mainly drumming and dancing. These include Borborbor, Agbadza, and Islamic dance. These are performed during festivals and funerals.

Crafts

Weaving of cloth (kente) and woodcarving are the commonest craftsmanship skills.

Traditional Administration

The people are ruled by traditional rulers who are chiefs with the title “Togbe.” There are three main paramountcy under which are divisional chiefs and these include Gbi, Alavanyo and Agumatsa.

The Municipal Assembly

This is the political administrative set-up in the municipality. It is headed by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) who is appointed by the president of the Republic and endorsed by the Assembly members of the municipality.

Economic Activities

The main activities include: Farming (about 55 %), Trading (about 25%), Livestock rearing (about 15%) and others (about 5)

The main cash crops are cocoa, maize, cassava, rice, yam and various vegetables notable amongst them being ‘nkontomire’, tomatoes, pepper and okro.

Industrial Development

The following could be considered as some industrial activities in the district:

  • Gun smithing is being undertaken in some communities in the municipality
  • Sand winning in Alavanyo area

Communication

There are cellular operators in the district. MTN, AT, Vodafone, Glo, and Expresso are the main cellular companies in the municipality.

Road Type And Network

There is a tarred road, which runs through the district linking the Northern Region and Southern districts of the Volta Region to the national capital, Accra. Other roads but not all in the Hohoe Township have been tarred. There is a tarred road linking Likpe-Bakua to the district capital and it is envisaged that it will be extended to the Wli waterfalls to boost tourism. Most of the roads in the district are not tarred. Some roads to some smaller communities become unmotorable during the rainy season; these are mostly in Fodome-Gbledi areas which are at the base of mountainous areas.

State Transport Buses (STC) and several other vehicles ply these roads to Accra and other parts of the country and the municipality.

Health facilities

The municipality has been divided into four (4) Health Sub-municipalities namely: Alavanyo, Agumatsa, Gbi-Uban and Hohoe. Hohoe Municipality has a total of twenty-three (23) health facilities including the Regional Hospital, two privates Hospitals, Tsen Health Centres and the rest being CHPS compounds CHPS compounds. There are also two school clinics in the municipality. There is a Midwifery Training School which is a Diploma awarding institution in Midwifery and University of Health and Allied Sciences dedicated for training health professionals.
