Background Information

The Offinso North District is one of the 43 districts of the Ashanti Region. It is a newly created district curved out of the Offinso District now Offinso Municipal and was inaugurated on 29th February, 2008. Offinso North district was directly under the administration of the mother district (Offinso Municipal) until the end of the year 2008. The district was established by LI 1856. The district is one of the farthest (92km) to the Kumasi Metropolis – the regional capital and is a fast-growing district because of the migration due to tomato and yam farming. The district has five (5) Health Demarcated sub-districts namely;Akomadan Sub District (Capital Akomdan), Nkenkaasu Sub District (Capital Nkenkaasu), Kobreso Sub District (Capital Kobreso), Mankramso Sub District (Capital Mankramso) and Amponsakrom Sub District (Capital Amponsakrom). The district capital is Akomadan, which is situated on the Kumasi – Techiman trunk road.

Location And Sizes

The district lies between longitudes 1 60 W and 1 45 E and latitudes 7 20N and 6 50S. The total land area is about 741 kilometres square.

Climate

It lies in the semi-equatorial climate zone and experiences a double maxima rainfall regime. The rainfall season is from April to June, whilst the second period starts in September and ends in October. The mean rainfall is between 125cm and 180cm. the dry season is quite pronounced and occurs between November and March. Relative humidity is generally high ranging between 75-80 percent in the rainy season and 70-72 percent in the dry season. A maximum temperature of 300 C is experienced between March and April. The mean monthly Temperature is about 720 C.

Population Distribution By Sub-Districts

The major commodities traded are agricultural produce such as plantain, cocoa, yam, cassava, tomato, pepper, garden eggs, and manufactured goods.

Migration Trend

Migration is mostly from the North into the district. Some come as settler farmers whilst others come to work during the long spell of dry season in the north and return when farming season is ushered in. However, there are others mostly the indigenes who migrate from the district to the cities of Kumasi and Accra in such non-existing jobs.

Culture

The indigenes are Asantes. The Asante Culture is, therefore, the dominant culture in the district. There are, however, other minority cultures that are practiced by the migrant settlers mostly from the North.

traditional Set-Up

The district has sub-chiefs and “Odikros”. They all owe allegiance and pay homage to the Offinsohene who is the Paramount Chief. There are also lineage and family heads who are the fulcrum around whom the unity, cohesion, and stability of lineages, families, and communities revolve.

Modern Political Administration

The Offinso North District Assembly is the highest political and administrative authority in the district. Under Section 10 of the Local Government Act, 1993 (Act 462) the Assembly exercises deliberative, administrative, and executive functions in the district. The District Chief Executive is the political and executive head of the Assembly. He is nominated by the President of the Republic of Ghana and approved by two-thirds of the members’ presents and voting.

Health Facilities In the District

Geographically all our health facilities are located on the main Kumasi – Techiman truck road. The district has only three existing health facilities.
